Samuel Langdon, New Hampshire pastor and former Harvard president, preached this message in 1788. It’s title? The Republic of the Israelites An Example to the American States. Election sermons were common throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and this one shows the practical application of the Bible illustrating the structure and organization of America’s new government. The U.S. Constitution was still one state vote away from ratification. Shortly after Langdon preached this message, New Hampshire became the ninth state to approve the constitution and thus install the most amazing and unparalleled national organizing document in world history. Capitalism vs. Socialism: Ten Cannots

Reverend William J.H. Boetcker was a turn-of-the-century minister born just 18 years after the assassination of President Lincoln. Lincoln has been attributed comments that were actually published by this Presbyterian clergyman just before America’s entry into World War I. The “Ten Cannots” are a series of maxims that are bedrock to America’s economic system–capitalism–and another reminder that socialism in any form does not work and is certainly the antithesis of of Biblical thought. These principles, though not referenced with chapter and verse in the Bible, can easily be retrofitted into a Scripture-based message on stewardship, responsibility, and the Biblical foundations for our economic system. Capitalism is not perfect because men are not perfect. Here are Boetcker’s Ten Cannots:

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

Health Care: Socialized or Individualized?

God has ordained civil government to protect the rights of its citizens, not to provide for their personal needs. The current invasion of government into the private sector economy is unprecedented! Government-controlled (and owned) economy is the classic definition of socialism, no matter what economic sector it might be. The health care industry is one of the largest in our economy.
